DeMarcus Cousins host free camp and donates score board
DeMarcus Cousins teamed up with VSP Vision Care to a host a completely free summer basketball camp for underserved and at risk youth at Sacramento High School last week. This was DeMarcus’ 3rd year putting on his Elite Skills Basketball Camp in Sacramento.
165 camp scholarships were given out to several non-profit organizations including St. Hope and St. John’s Program. DeMarcus also awarded 50 scholarships to online applicants who nominated a deserving child from Northern California ranging all the way from Eureka to Manteca.
Campers and their families received free eye exams and glasses onboard the VSP Vision Care mobile eye clinic van all 3 days of camp. All 165 campers also were given a free pair of Nike Vision sunglasses courtesy of VSP Vision. Boogie will be hosting another free basketball camp with VSP in his home town of Mobile, Alabama later on in August.
“Working with DeMarcus to bring eye care and glasses to local children in need was a natural fit for VSP,” said Jim McGrann, president of VSP Vision Care. “The VSP Mobile Eyes program grew from relief efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, where we spent time in Mobile, Ala., DeMarcus’ hometown. We are delighted to come full circle to work together to increase access to care in our now shared hometown of Sacramento.”
“Teaming up with VSP is helping kids in Sacramento and Mobile see better and provides them with opportunities they may not otherwise receive. Having good vision is critical both on and off the court” , said DeMarcus Cousins. “Me growing up I wish I would have had a chance to interact with an NBA player. This is just my way of giving back to them.”
DeMarcus closed out camp Thursday by presenting the Sacramento High School staff a check for almost $28,000 for brand new LED Scoreboards which will be up by the fall.
DeMarcus Cousins, staff, and campers would like to Thank all our sponsors.
