DeMarcus Cousins Gets Own Day in Alabama

DeMarcus went back to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama to team up with VSP Vision Care to host a completely free youth basketball camp at his former school LeFlore Magnet High School. 125 sponsorships were given out to Mobile youth and each camper and their families received free eye exams and glasses onboard the VSP mobile eye clinic everyday of camp. All 125 campers also got a free pair of Nike Vision sunglasses courtesy of VSP Vision Care.

While in town, DeMarcus visited with Mayor Sandy Stimpson. Mayor Stimpson and DMC spent two hours touring parts of the city. DeMarcus and the Mayor visited his old neighborhood of Toulminville (TMV) to share his vision of revitalizing Michael Figures Park. The park sits directly next to his former high school and has become dilapidated and over-run with graffiti, and it no longer serves a purpose for youth within the community.

Cousins, who played at LaFlore High School, is hoping to partner with the city to give the park a makeover. He wants to clean it up and add a new playground, as well as revitalize the basketball court, where currently one hoop is missing from the run-down court. DMC envisions turning the inner city park into something that would resemble New York’s Rucker Park and has already sought some help from current sponsor, Nike.

Mayor Stimpson awarded DMC with the “Key To The City” as well as Proclaiming August 22 and August 23 as “DEMARCUS COUSINS DAY” for his dedication to helping improve the community of Mobile, Alabama.
